Temple Tiferet Shalom seeks a music director to partner with our Rabbi in providing creative direction of meaningful, vibrant, and spiritual music in all areas of Temple life. We are looking for someone to bring the community together by blending traditional Reform melodies with the future of Jewish music. Working under the direction of the Rabbi, and in collaboration with our volunteer choir and other musicians, the music director will guide the congregation in all matters affecting the Jewish musical activities of the synagogue. The music director will encourage congregational participation for adults and youth at multiple points of entry by imbuing their passion for Jewish music within worship and communal gatherings.

Temple Tiferet Shalom is looking for a diverse pool of candidates and encourages all applicants with a strong music background to apply.

Responsibilities:

Liturgical Leadership:
Sing and play as a congregational shaliach tzibbur (prayer leader) during:
Bi-monthly Friday and Festival evening services
Monthly Saturday morning family services
B’nei Mitzvah celebrations and life cycle events
Special congregational programs
High Holy Day services as either a soloist or choir director (if applicable)
Work in collaboration with the Rabbi on the continual development of prayer services and holiday celebrations according to the needs of the community.
Encourage a participative attitude in the congregation to sing, rather than just listen.
Introduce new music to the congregational repertoire that speaks to the diversity of the Jewish musical landscape.
Work with the Religious School and Preschool to provide music education to the youth of the Temple.

Administrative
Recruit, hire, train, and direct the paid and volunteer song leaders, choir, and instrumentalists (where appropriate), including rehearsal/practice time, with more frequent rehearsals in preparation for festivals and High Holy Days.
Attend monthly worship committee meetings.
Organize musical events, concerts, and musical scholars‐in‐residence.

Prerequisites:

Experience leading Jewish worship services and communal singing
Familiarity with Jewish music, both liturgical and contemporary
Knowledge of Torah and Haftarah chanting
Knowledge of Shabbat/High Holy Day nusach
Comfort within a Reform setting
Fluid Hebrew reading and general Judaic knowledge
Ability to teach children and adults
Credentials from a music training program
Proficient in vocal/singing and either piano and/or guitar

Salary and Compensation:

Starting is commensurate with qualifications and experience within the range of $25-40,000.

We expect the position to average 15 hours per week, but to be variable, concentrated more during weekends and Jewish holidays. This is a part-time position with a flexible, varying schedule depending on the ritual calendar. Opportunities for additional work with Temple Tiferet Shalom may arise, depending on the candidate’s skills.
