Music Director/Song and Service Leader
Job Description
The Temple B’nai Abraham (TBA) Music Director/Song and Service Leader will work with Rabbi Alison Adler (Hebrew College ‘08) to create and expand TBA’s musical programming for all ages. We are a casual and engaged community, and our services and holidays encourage singing and participation. In the summers Friday evenings are held at the local beach. Friday services tend to have niggunim and melodies coming out of the Rising Song Institute network.
For the right person we will adjust the job description (for example, maybe you can’t come every Friday or every Sunday). We are open to Jewish musicians who haven’t done much of this before and want to learn – and bring comfort, joy and connection through music.
This position includes the following areas, each with associated administrative tasks, with the potential to grow and include additional opportunities:
Co-lead Friday night Shabbat services, Jewish holidays (Hanukkah events and the evenings of Purim, Shavuot, Simchat Torah, as well as a Sukkot event and a Community Passover Seder). Sometimes we add an earlier “Tot Shabbat” and then dinner and the regular service.
Work with Rabbi Adler and staff to develop and implement a musical curriculum for the children in our learning program on Sunday mornings. Also lead music with young families who attend our Sunday morning PJ Library programs (bi-weekly playgroup for parents, babies and toddlers and monthly Learning Roots for parents and 3-6 year olds).
Potential parts of the job include:
Co-lead (with parents) family programs/interactive services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and possibly participate in the regular High Holy Day Services based on experience or as the job expands.
Work with volunteers and staff to continue to build the Young Adult Havurah and grow our Gen X/Millenial community.
Co-lead or lead monthly Saturday morning or afternoon/Havdalah programs for young families.
Co-lead lifecycle/b’nai mitzvah.
Create Rising Song Circles or similar ways to bring music outside of services.
Bring your ideas!
Administrative responsibilities:
Supply music to our administrator to copy for all programs as needed.
Use TBA social media and videos to help introduce and teach new music and engage people.
Do outreach to members and potential members as needed.
Communicate about programming so it is included in TBA marketing.
