Job Description

Temple B’nai Israel, Oklahoma City
Soloist/Musician in Residence

About Temple B’nai Israel

Temple B’nai Israel is a reform congregation in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City is the 20th largest city in the U.S. making us larger than cities like Nashville. OKC has great restaurants, museums, healthcare, and education without having smog, congestion or a high cost of living.

Temple B’nai Israel is celebrating our 120th birthday this year, which means we were founded before Oklahoma even became a state. Over that 120-year history, we’ve had only five Rabbis (come here, you’ll like it) , one cantor and just one Soloist/Musician in Residence. No, she didn’t live to be 120. This Soloist/Musician in Residence position came into being just 8 years ago. After doing a terrific job of adding meaning and joy to our services, putting together a Hebrew school curriculum and educating our children, she has decided to retire.

We need someone who will carry on this commitment to adding music and meaning to our worship.

This part-time position could be combined with our newly developed Membership Engagement position (or could be combined with other positions such as the Youth Group Advisor, Hebrew or Sunday School teacher of receptionist) for a full-time job or could be a part-time Music position based upon your qualifications.

These are the requirements for this position. This part-time position (approximately 15-20 hours a week) would work closely with our Rabbi to:
• Prepare and lead music for our weekly Friday (Erev Shabbat) services.
o Guitar is a plus.
• Lead music for High Holidays and coordinate other musicians as needed.
• Add music for other special holidays and festival services as mutually agreed upon.
• Ideally would also be able to lead/direct the volunteer choir for High Holidays (and other occasional programming) and co-ordinate with an accompanist.
o If not able to lead or direct the choir themselves, the candidate would coordinate with an outside choir director to lead the volunteer choir.
Additionally, while not required we would prefer the candidate also be able to:
• Provide music for our monthly Tot Shabbat services.
• Tutor and prepare B’nai Mitzvah students (approximately 4 students a year).
o Ability to teach trope is a plus.
• Lead music/teach Sunday School as a music educator.
