Job Description

Temple Adath Israel (TAI), a Reform Congregation in Lexington KY invites applications for a musical director for the 2024 High Holy Day services. In collaboration with Rabbi David Wirtschafter; our adult choir, Shir Adat; and TAI’s Music and Worship Committee, the successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:

• Perform cantorial solos
• Coordinate all music including instrumentation, solo vocalists, and choir for the following services:
– S’lichot (possibly)
– Rosh Hashana evening and Day 1
– Kol Nidrei
– Yom Kippur morning, afternoon, Yizkor, and Ne’ilah
• Coordinate rehearsals for these services

The following skills and background are needed for this position:
• Vocal and musical excellence, religious knowledge.
• Experience working with choirs
• Organizational and management competence, interpersonal communication, willingness to take advice and be flexible regarding musical variety and the decision-making process
• Compatibility and ability to collaborate with key leadership of the congregation, most especially the Rabbi, the Shir Adat Liaison, and the Music and Worship Committee membership

Compensation, expectations, and benefits:
Upon Board of Trustees approval, we anticipate that the High Holy Days musical director will receive $5,000 – $8,000 plus travel and associated expenses. The term of employment will be for the High Holy Day Season 2024.

o your motivation for applying for the position, your musical style, and your spiritual and religious background
o your broad vision for the musical program for these services
o a draft timeline for starting the position and any extenuating circumstances that might complicate these plans

– An updated resume that highlights your experiences with provision of leadership for musical programs for High Holy Day and other services.
– Video and/or audio recording of your singing two High Holy Day pieces of your choosing. If possible, one should be a solo piece and the other a piece sung with a choir.
– Two references; one from a Rabbi you’ve worked with and one from a lay leader/musician you’ve worked with.

Process:
A taskforce/subcommittee of TAI’s Music and Worship committee will review all materials and invite selected candidates for a zoom interview to discuss this position. We anticipate a rapid completion of the process.
